The gas company is putting in new gas lines and dug a huge hole next to our oak tree, severing tons of roots. I’m planning on getting an arborist out here, but until then, wanting to know what others think the damage to the tree will be.

This is a big deal for the health and stability of the tree. Follow the advice of your arborist for its recovery. Unfortunately, the power company/municipality will probably tell you to kick rocks. The roots/tree are in the utility easement.
