The March meeting of Gunnedah Garden Club was so enjoyable, commencing with a delicious morning tea, then on to business.

We welcomed Chris Brooks, Sue Braby, Sandra Tydd’s granddaughter Kyra, new member Amy Elton, with little Jordan and it was really good to see Cheryl Field back post op. Even Ellen Mitchell came, moon boot and all.

Vacant positions have now been filled. Coral Lorimer is vice president, with Meryl Hennessy and Marg Kersley taking the treasurer’s role. Thank you, ladies.

Fay Byrne brought the raffle, which was won by Marg Kersley and the potting mix was won by Gwen Donaldson. Next month Coralie Howe will bring the raffle.

The hostess was Gwen Donaldson and next month it will be Julia Withers.

Coralie Howe has been working with the show society for many years and ran through some tips on entering flowers and plants. She suggested encouraging children to enter the junior section as they get so much enjoyment out of it.

Lyn ran through invitations to functions from other garden clubs.

Robyn is planning the schedule for the year and there are lots of ideas and suggestions to fill the calendar.

The flower comp results: 1st Julia Withers’ dahlia, 2nd Sandra Tydd’s blue butterfly bush, 3rd Helen Murrell’s gerbera.

The vegetable comp results: 1st Julia Withers’ grapes, 2nd Fay Byrnes’ cherry tomatoes.

We will trial having the competition prior to the meeting next month, so we can have time to talk about the entries and learn more.

Colleen Fuller, as a member of Pink Up, came to collect the $500 cheque on behalf of little twin Tori, who has been hospitalised again due to a rejection of her liver transplant. Though medication seems to be working now, so our hopes and prayers are with her, for a full recovery.

Colleen also spoke about the loss of the hospital’s helipad. Seems the government is doing away with rural helipads. Unbelievable. She also spoke about 24/7 policing in Gunnedah. We now have police on call at night.

In April, we meet on the Anzac Day public holiday. We will talk about and honour those who served, bring our family’s memorabilia. Julia Withers will talk about growing poppies and Robyn Clydsdale will show us how to make paper poppies.

The GGC was invited to visit Aleena Greenaway’s Flower Farm, Milroy Meadows, and was treated to a vibrant display of dahlias in full bloom. Some of these blooms were exceptionally large. Aleena provided insight into her work in cultivating these flowers, which are sold commercially to local florists and utilised for special occasions, such as weddings. We hope to return later in the year when other flowers, including daffodils and stocks, will be in bloom. It was a delightful conclusion to the day.Aleena Greenaway showing Coralie Howe, Lyn Sanson and Ellen Mitchell her rows of dahlias.
