Police closed a road in Birstall after a suspected explosive device was found in a back-garden shed.

Leicestershire Police was called to the property in Saltersgate Drive at 2.10pm (Wednesday, April 8) and they closed off part of nearby Wellgate Avenue as a precaution.

The cordon on the street has since been lifted. Numerous police officers were seen at the address.

The force said in a statement: “Police were called to an address in Saltersgate Drive, Birstall around 2.10pm today (Wednesday, April 8) following a suspected explosive device being discovered in a garden shed.

“A cordon has been put in place at the property. A nearby road was closed and has since been reopened.

“Officers remain at the scene waiting the arrival of colleagues from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit who have been called to attend and examine the device.”
