LIHUE — Kapaa High School boys volleyball suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the Waimea High School boys volleyball program on Friday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball games played at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Despite dropping to the Menehune in straight sets — Waimea 25-19, 27-25 and 25-22 — on the final night of the KIF first round, Kapaa was announced the winner of the first round with a 5-1 win-loss record.
Kauai High School boys volleyball, also earning a straight-set win against the Voyagers on Friday night, finishes the round in second place with a 3-3 record, a tie with Waimea High School. Island School, despite strong play from the Voyagers, is looking for its first win.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium at Island School on Friday night, the Red Raider boys downed the Voyagers, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-23.
The Voyagers pulled to a 5-5 stalemate in the first set on a Kauai service error, but Kauai took control, 11-9 on a John Ibe smack. An Island School hitting error gave the Red Raiders control, 23-14 before Kauai sophomore Pierson Fox served up the remaining points to the win, including back-to-back aces.
Kauai stayed in control for the second and third sets.
During the third set, Island School pulled to within one, 23-24 after combining a block and a Piko Vaughn hit. But Dylan Takata stepped up and sealed the threat, 25-23 with his whack that adjusted the Voyagers to a triple block effort.
With the KIF first round settled, there is no need for playoff matches and the next KIF boys volleyball games take place on April 14 when Kauai meets Waimea at the Clem Gomes Gym, and Kapaa faces Island School at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
The junior varsity contest serves up from 5 p.m. at both venues, and the varsity games start no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
