Five years ago, it made perfect sense that one of the first in-person theater performances in the Bay Area after the pandemic struck was by the We Players — specialists in outdoor, site-specific performances.

In that show, “Psychopomp,” groups of 1-2 audience members at a time tramped through McLaren Park to encounter characters from various global folkloric traditions who all serve similar roles as guides, messengers and gatekeepers between this world and the next one.

Nick Dickson as ancient Greece’s Charon ferried us from place to place with the “yaargh” charm of an absent-minded sea captain. As Chinese mythology’s Ox Head and Horse Face, Ling Ling Lee made her shoulders talk to each other like a classic comedy double act. Alan Coyne, playing a version of Celtic mythology’s Cat Sith, popped out from behind foliage with feline spookiness.

Now these performers revive their characters, joined by other veteran entertainers and some newcomers, as Creative Director Ava Roy restages the show in the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park.
