We have a random ‘decorative’ hole in the grass with an outdoor light. Any suggestions to trim it out or just make it look nicer in general?

Fill it up with some dirt and add grass seeds.

Fill that crater back in before someone breaks an ankle or you scalp the lawn with your mower deck. A single light in a random dirt hole out in the middle of the grass is the definition of polka dot landscaping. It creates visual clutter and has zero structure to anchor it to the rest of your yard. Path lights are meant to illuminate a walkway or a specific hazard not just sit isolated in a turf basin waiting to collect water and weeds.

If you actually need a light right there for safety you need to incorporate it into a sweeping planting bed that connects to your house or a pathway. You want continuous flowing masses of plants that give the fixture some context. Throw in some structural evergreen shrubs as a backdrop and layer down to low native perennials so the light is actually illuminating a functional landscape instead of bare dirt. Function and beauty have to work together.

If there is no walkway nearby and this was just put there for decoration pull the fixture out completely. Bring in some good quality topsoil to level that depression flush with the surrounding grade and throw down some grass seed. Do not waste your time trying to trim out a random isolated hole with border stones or mulch because it will always look like a tripping hazard you forgot to fill.

Plant some annual starts, or sprinkle some seeds!

That’s a great spot for annuals. A little bit of fresh, fast color every year can really brighten up a yard.
