Choose a local vining Lonicera and it should be very happy to do this. I prefer to grow mine straight up the tree without a decomposing support, though.

Rosa setigera is a nice climbing rose native to OH (looking at mine on the arbor outside my front window right now; took a couple years to go from a tiny bare-root stick to reaching about 8’ of climbing height).

Coral honeysuckle is one of my all time favourites, but Virgin’s Bower is pretty, too (though you have to be careful when handling).
Toxicodendron radicans
Virgins bower. I have it on my fence/ it’s so pretty
I just got crossvine to climb at my house. It has really cool flowers and leaves turn a nice hue for the fall
Are native *ipomoea* ground creepers or would they climb a structure like this?
try virginia creeper or trumpet vine
the ladder looks like it’s being overtaken by the plant
*Clematis virginiana* aka Virgin’s Bower. Be sure not to confuse with 2 close lookalikes.

Trumpet Vine
**Passiflora Incarnata**! The blooms are other-worldly and very pretty.
ETA: and, they produce maypops (edible fruit)
A thought: Plan to prune the vines that get up into the tree so they don’t wrap branches and damage the tree.
Carolina Jessamine. I don’t know if it grows that far north but it’s native in the southeast.

Depends on your area. In mine I would choose passionflower.
