You can’t always get to zero lawn for a variety of reasons and certainly not always immediately. Often it’s a process. Planting beds and pine needles helped here. Also yard art: in this case my MIL’s bike converted to a planter, and a bottle tree. Other options in other areas: stepping stones, large rocks, gravel, bird bath, big planters.

    That’s inspiring!

…here I thought I was doing well with clover finally overtaking my crabgrass!

Nope. This is too beautiful. I’m going to need more photos.

It’s beautiful! And frankly a good compromise. Compromises aren’t the enemy. They are progress.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will we get rid of our lawns in a weekend if they’re any bigger than a postage stamp. That bed looks terrific though! I can’t wait to get out there and put a new one in myself.

Personally, I have the greatest revulsion to the sprawling lawns of suburbia, rural homes, and corporate campuses since those take up the greatest space and look, feel, and function exactly like the result of the utterly brain-dead decision-making process that they are.

But I can easily love small lawns in urban settings, in denser neighborhoods, or incorporated into larger garden designs. They can be the right touch on the right property, but that rests on the skill and artistry of the landscape designer. Enough lawn for setting a picnic in a rose garden, resting in the sun, or just giving a visual break to unrelieved activity can at times be exactly what is called for.

Looks beautiful! Yes, it takes time. Hardest part for me is waiting for the plants to take off and fill in the space!

More photos, please. Also, I would love to know how you made that! I want something just like that in my yard!

Amazing!! I would love to convert my backyard like this. Any tips for avoiding weeds? Even with weed cloth I have had issues with weeds in my backyard.
