Hi there- I like in Washington DC, and last year planted some basil, dill, parsley. This grew over the winter and I’m wondering if it’s an herb or weed? Thank you!

This is not any of the three herbs you planted, but it looks a little hemlock-y. Do the stems have any purple splotches on them?

Apiaceae contains edibles like parsley, carrot, and dill, but also contains a lot of things which will kill you dead, so it’s better to treat anything in it as a weed unless you’re absolutely certain of what it is.

That’s either carrot or certain death.

If it has carrot-like leaves, and you don’t know what it is. It’s best just to dump it in case it’s something dangerous.

  4. Stems look fuzzy which rules out poison hemlock

It’s from the carrot family and I don’t think it’s poison hemlock. Other than that, no idea. From those it looks most like a variety of parsley, but I don’t really think that that is parsley. It looks closer to fools parsley than actual parsley. Unless you get confirmation from an expert I would not eat that. I don’t even touch anything from the carrot family unless I know for certain what they are since they all look so similar and some are incredibly poisonous. If you want to keep it I think it’s best as a decorative, definitely not as an herb

it certainly looks like summercarrots growing somewhere a bit warmer than Denmark, the are about 6 weeks ahead.

Just let them be,pull them up mid june, no other plants looks like carrots and even if its something else no plants from that family develop flowers untill the second year so no worrues about them suddenly spreading no matter what.

Parsley will overwinter even for me in ny- its a biannual – but that does not look like parsley (smell would be a good test) so i think its a weed

A lot of things in the carrot family want to kill you, and this looks like some relative. I would personally trash the little guy and not take the risk if you are at all uncertain. Make sure you wear gloves if you pull him up, some of the carrot family have liquid inside that can make your skin more sensitive to sun and cause bad burns.

It looks like Sprenger’s asparagus or Foxtail Fern.

Sure looks like carrot (*Daucus carota*) foliage to me. Try digging around in the soil a little and see if there’s a big fat colorful root down there. If not, it might be a wild carrot.
