Once the roots hit the water, I added the recommended amount of liquid nutrients. That was a couple of weeks ago. This is my first attempt. From what I read, I only need to add the nutrients at the beginning, right?

I have similar white spots on mine. If you refill the reservoir you should use nutrients. You can sometimes get away with one top off, but at some point you need to add more and or do a full change to rebalance the nutrients.
