It’s an exciting time of year, when we get to pot up our Dahlia tubers in holding pots and planters to transplant out in beds and borders in May. Dahlia are a magnificent flowering plant, giving us relentless amounts of flowers from late summer to the first frosts of autumn.

I very much enjoy growing Dahlia in the garden and tending to them throughout the summertime. The variety of Dahlia is vast, with different sizes, colours and flowers on offer. When selecting, make sure to read the description so you get what you would like. Dahlia can grow quite tall and will generally need support to keep them upright and easier to deadhead.

To get the best out of Dahlia, they need to be regularly deadheaded, which keeps the new buds and flowers coming.

I put each Dahlia tuber in a pot or several tubers in a planter filled with peat-free compost. I put them in a sheltered and sunny spot; these conditions trigger the tubers into life and start their growing season.

They will start to grow small bud eyes and be ready for transplanting out in May. The aim is to get ahead by ensuring the Dahlia tubers go in the ground ready to shoot up and flower.

Once you have potted your Dahlia tubers in a nice moist peat free compost you can let them establish themselves, look out for tiny green eyes in the coming months.

These will become shoots, and once the risk of frost passes, we can transplant each Dahlia tuber to their summer home in the beds and borders. Dahlia tubers will want a well-drained spot with plenty of sunshine.

The flower display will be the face of summertime, with other plants struggling to keep up with the amount of flowers being offered by the Dahlia.

The flowers can be snipped off and enjoyed in a vase indoors. A few lines of Dahlia in a growing patch can bring bunches and bunches of flowers to share with friends and family.

Last week, Tom recommended a beautiful evergreen plant that will give you “red, pink and white flowers”.
