Just ripped out all the awful plants in our front garden, now need your plant recommendations!
We’ve finally taken the plunge and cleared out the entire front garden. It’s a blank(ish) canvas now, and I’m after some advice on what to plant.
I’m ideally looking for:
– Plants that stay relatively low (won’t block windows or get massive)
– Something that looks decent all year round (evergreen or good winter interest)
– Low-maintenance
Any recommendations or favourite combinations would be massively appreciated.

Which way does it face?
Some to look at Choisya, Viburnum, Euronymous, Privet grown as a shrub, Photinia, Fatsia, Aucuba Japonica, Ligustrum Japonicum Excelsum Superbum
Native plants. Maybe plant some honeysuckle and a wildflower mix
I have a lavender hedge on a similar border. It requires one trim per year and that’s it. The bees love it and all the neighbours admire it when in bloom
Hebe Magicolour, Mugo Pines, Rhododendron, Hebe Topiara, large decorative rocks!?
Laurel hedge
We want … A shrubbery!
Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get the two-level effect with a little path running down the middle.
I love Juniper for low-growing native evergreen coverage! Blue carpet is a good one and goes very nicely with lavender as another user suggested. You could also add a pair of columnar yews, perhaps in the corners near the house, for some verticality and symmetry. They grow very slowly and very slim, so wouldn’t block the light or view to/from the windows.
Plant some Christmas box plants, heavenly smell in winter
Your current garden feels very exposed; there isn’t much separation between the street and your house. I feel like you need a hedge plant around that bend especially. Something evergreen like box bush or laurel maybe?
I know it goes against your wants but I love the look of a tree on a bend, plus new build estates need more trees in my opinion. I put a cherry blossom in my front garden a few years ago, I look forward to it flowering every year. I love catching people stopping to look at it with their partners and children, it’s so wholesome.
I’m also sucker for a lavender alba (white) pathway, give them a few years and they merge together really nicely
hydrangea annabelle under your window. I also have this in my garden on the front and I love the look of the dried flower heads through winter.
Something potted, a lolliepop shaped tree/bush for symmetry (and to hide that box on the wall)

Move
Reed fence for some wind protection and privacy.
