New garden waste permits came into effect across South Lanarkshire from Wednesday, April 1, this year.

The permit applies from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027.

The colour of the permit will be pink, and any bins displaying last year’s permit colour (yellow) will not be collected. The cost of a permit for the year is £46.49.

Your payment will come out of your bank immediately like any other online transaction. The permit will then be printed and prepared to send out to you immediately thereafter.

Food waste will continue to be collected free of charge for households that decide not to sign up for a garden waste permit.

The scheme applies to the whole of South Lanarkshire including rural Clydesdale where many households previously did not receive a burgundy bin collection.

Executive director of the council’s community and enterprise resources, Kevin Carr, said: “Households with permits in place will see their bins collected every two weeks, except over the Christmas and New Year period.

“For households that do not wish to purchase a permit, there are many free options available such as taking items to any of our six household recycling centres or composting waste at home. Information on both of these is available on the council’s website.”
