LIHUE — Waimea High School boys volleyball picked up two sets, and Kapaa High School lost its second set of the season on Monday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation games played at the Clem Gomes Gym and the Kauai High School gymnasium.
Down two sets to none, the Menehune erupted in sets three and four to force the Voyagers to the fifth set where Island School claimed a two-point margin. The final scores read 25-19, 17-25 in favor of the Voyagers for the first two encounters on the hardwood. Waimea came back with wins — 25-11, and 25-23 — in the third and fourth sets before Island School settled the fifth set, 15-13.
Over at the Raiderdome, the Kauai junior varsity set the evening’s tone with a 2-1 win over the JV Warriors, 25-23, 25-15, and 12-15.
But the varsity Red Raiders, despite a valiant effort, came up short, losing the night 1-4 to the varsity Warriors.
Opening to a 0-4 deficit to Kapaa in the first set, the Red Raiders overtook the Warrior effort 9-6 on a Dylan Takata bang. Answering back, Kapaa’s Andrew Durocher hit one, and a Warrior ace pulled Kapaa to within a point, 10-11.
Kauai sophomore Pierson Fox answered with back-to-back hammers for the 15-12 lead before Red Raider hitting errors opened the Kapaa doors to a 16-16 logjam.
A Kauai service error kept the Warriors in the chase, 22-23, and a Kauai hitting error and called net violation put the Warriors knocking, 24-23.
But the door wouldn’t open and Kauai capitalized on a Warrior hitting miscue, 24-24.
Durocher answered with a whack, and a Kauai hitting error sealed the deal, 26-24 in favor of the Warriors.
Rolling on the momentum of the first set, Kauai overcame the Warriors in the second set, 25-16 before Kapaa put away the night in the third and fourth sets.
Capitalizing on a called net violation, Kapaa passing errors, and back-to-back aces from Justin Lopez, Kauai was on a roll, 13-6 in the second set.
Kapaa entered the third set with renewed energy, and a whack from Tyler Thornton put the Warriors up, 14-5. Down 21-12, Kauai answered with a pair of Fox hits for the 14-21 deficit. Warriors Thornton and Cyson Woodward made it 23-14 before Kauai answered to a 22-24 deficit on serves from Laurence Ganir and hits from Fox and Ganir. Fox got the 23rd point, but Kapaa put away the contest on a Red Raider hitting error.
The next KIF volleyball games take place on Friday when Kapaa hosts Waimea at the Bernice Hundley Gym. The JV contest serves up from 5 p.m. followed by the varsity matchup starting not earlier than 6:30 p.m. Kauai will meet Island School at the Wilcox Gymnasium.
