help with lippage on pavers

I'm laying 60×60 porcelain pavers over sand.

I screeded the sand really really well but it was a little wet so didn't have much give and was super dense. Looked pretty flat when i was hand tampering with the mallet, spirit level shows all good. Only after putting in the poly sand is the lippage really visable.

I haven't gone over the top with the compacter yet, hoping to see if anyone thinks that will help flatten these out?

I've only just read that sometime these type of large format pavers aren't perfectly flat and that larger pavers make lippage more obvious
