How many Junipers have you personally assassinated and what did you do wrong?
fresh meat to replace my two recently deceased juniperus chinensis. Hopefully these larger blue star and grey owl species will be more hardy in a larger deeper pot.
So far just one. Made the very rookie mistake early on and had it inside.

Over-watering.
Pruned AND repotted in the middle of summer.
Went on vacation and picked the wrong person to look after them for a week.
After the third time I fell out of the hobby for about a decade.

Don’t futz with them too much.

For me it was under watering. I went on vacation, the watering system broke down the day I left, three weeks, no water. Now I have eyes on the system. A friend stops by just to make sure the plants have been watered.

Had it inside.
Since then, no deaths. Well no juniper deaths at least.
I still have my first 2 junipers, cedars don’t like me though

Does it count if my inlaws kill it while I’m out of town?

None out of the 3 actually. They have been extremely resilient in my experience.

One, cut too much green and It died. Other trees all good!

Styled way too aggressively. Started as a 5gal nursery stock and did a ton to it. Took a lot off, branches bent, jins made, didn’t leave leftover foliage for later removal down to a better silhouette. Kind of frustrating because I paid a fair bit for the workshop with a VERY good professional, but the tree just went into a hard decline right after the workshop/styling.

1, but it was nursery stock that just up and died for no reason before I even had a chance to work on it.

Honestly, none I think? I’ve killed a JBP and a Mugo pine, but of the 40+ junipers I have, none have died. I did a lot of research early on that kept me from doing anything silly or drastic.

0. But thats because Im not a fan of conifers, and as such have never owned one.
Spiritual_Maize
None. I don’t like the way they look, I’ll never own one!
