Loving this ring of fire but new leaf immediately was spooky from bursting through the side of the leaf sheath, my fears of it drying and not opening correctly were confirmed this morning where it looks like the sheath has totally stopped opening since the poke, I acted quickly and sliced the sheath to relieve the pressure, not sure where to go from here it gets lots of light on my east windowsill but might have been a bit dry in terms of humidity, I only recently picked it up and I’m not sure I’m a fan of the soil arrangement so I’ve only watered it a couple times when the top inch or so was dry. I’m assuming I’ll have to cut the sheath off but not sure how it’s supposed to go

I would not have cut the sheath, I would have either left it alone or used a damp paper towel to moisten it a bit and then very carefully prize it open.

Does this plant tend to get stuck leaves? If not I would just leave alone

You made it worse. Just let it do its thing.

I think it will be fine, but stop messing with it. I had to cut a few leafs because of my meddling with my pink princess leaves and it is recovering so slowly. Just let it do its thing and support with moisture next time, for example by wrapping a warm wet paper towel around it or spraying lightly.

Had you not cut the sheath, the pressure would have caused the sheath to open naturally once there was enough tension from the unfurling leaf.

Now the sheath is just hanging there and will not be able to burst open, essentially suffocating that area and keeping it trapped.

You can try to remove the remaining sheath to rectify this…though you could cause more damage than help.

Hopefully the sheath will dry up and become easy for the leaf to tear through it on its own.

I would just spritz it with a spray bottle of water regularly or give it a humidifier.

We usually make things worse when we are trying to help. I think many of us in this group have learned the hard way that you should just leave things as they are if you are really trying to help your plant.

Also, an odd leaf here or there is just part of nature and not every leaf on your plant needs to look perfect 🤷🏽‍♀️

…. I like that you were curious …. Sometimes we need to try things …. See what happens if you “do this”

It’s a plant… this leaf might come out a little ugly. …. It will live …. And grow you a new one.

you probably won’t do that again….

    Have fun with it !
