A QUIZ night and raffle raised £600 for school gardening projects.

Twyford and Ruscombe Horticultural Society ran the event at Charvil village hall on Friday night to fund projects at Charvil Piggott Primary School, Polehampton Infant School and Colleton School.

Myrddin Jones, who chairs the society, said: “We charged £7 per head but told people to bring their own drinks and snacks so as to keep our expenses at a minimum and therefore the amount we can donate at a maximum.”

More than 80 people took part in the 10-round quiz, which included general knowledge questions ranging from sport to science.

Sarah Darby, a member of the association, described the event it as having “a really good feel”.

Charvil Piggott Primay plans to revitalise its outdoor area and buy new raised beds, tools, compost and plants.

Teacher Fiona Stocker said: “We are passionate about outdoor learning and we would use their kind donation to plant sensory/edible plants in the EYFS garden.

“The children will use these in the mud kitchen to improve motor skills as well as using their senses of smell and sight to explore the world around them.

“Alongside this learning, they will also be finding out about seasonality, plant lifecycles and discovering how we can care for living things.”

Jane Phipps, who leads the gardening projects at Colleton Primary said that the donation would be used to create a “memorial garden in memory of our former Chair of Governors, Bridget Ditcham, who contributed so much to our school.”

The garden will include Ms Ditcham’s favourite plants as well as individually designed flowerpots.

Liz Castell, the co-Head at Polehampton Schools said: “Any donations the school receives will go towards enhancing our already wonderful Forest School areas.

“Forest School plays a vital role in supporting children’s wellbeing, confidence and connection with the natural world.”
