I moved into this house in the fall and thought this tree was dead due to the shedding bark. To my surprise it is now throwing out new leaves.
What I thought was a vine growing underneath the bark seems to possibly be the tree compartmentalizing?
It's growing along a driveway, but the driveway has been here for 40+ years

It just so happens that your tree friend here is only mostly dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive
