Hi all!

just wanted some advice regarding our new gardenbed that I'm trying to set up for next spring.

we bought this house about a year ago, and have let the garden go to weed. I've spent the last two days pulling out the weeds and spreading gypsum as it's a dense clay soil.

I've had chatgpt (no one else to ask) guide me through and it has suggested:

  1. Covering the gardenbed in compost (about 25 25L bags worth)

  2. spreading cow manure (about 15 25L bags)

  3. using a rotery hoe to dig through the compost, gypsum, and manure

  4. cover with cardboard as a barrier over winter.

  5. spread mulch (2-3 bags) over the cardboard.

then to just leave it over winter and it should be ready for planting come spring.

I've jumped onto hammerbarn to price it all, and it's come out close to $750 for a rotery hoe, compost (osmocote) and manure (fine farms).

is the above course of action reasonable/necessary?

if anyone has any other cost effective options, I'd greatly appreciate it!

How big is the actual bed? What is your location, so we might be able to help with cheaper local suppliers and plant suggestions? Personally I’d just cancel the gym membership and muscle in and do it with a shovel and fork and spend more on mulch (2 to 3 bags won’t get you far if you’re mulching it 5-10cm thick)

Cheaper to buy manure and compost from a garden supply place than in bags!
