Fairhope leaders, state officials and local citizens alike gathered for a rededication ceremony of the Fairhope Municipal Pier, South Beach, Rose Garden and Fountain on Thursday, March 26.

The original Fairhope pier was constructed in 1895 and over the years has evolved into one of the flagship landmarks of the city of Fairhope. Beginning in April 2024, construction started on a new waterfront project, led by Rolin Construction based in Spanish Fort, seeking to install enhancements and upgrades in a cherished area of town. More than $10 million in RESTORE Act funding paid for the project.

Reflecting on the project, Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan said it began even before she became mayor and was a hot topic of local discussion during the municipal election season. After taking office, she wanted to maintain the space for future generations to come.

“Growing up here and having generations of my family here, I knew what an important spot this was,” Sullivan said. “I knew that we wanted to keep the tradition of this spot, but we needed to have upgrades done.”

Those upgrades include new stormwater drainage, seawalls and sidewalks, along with new pavers, a rose garden and fountain that were installed. South Beach Park also received walking trails and an ADA-compliant switchback that goes from the bayfront to the bluff above.

In a special moment as part of the ceremony, the new Rose Garden and Fountain were dedicated to former Fairhope Mayor Tim Kant in recognition of his contributions to the city. Kant served as the public works director in the City of Fairhope beginning in 1983 before being elected mayor in 2000, a role he served until 2016. Under his 16 years’ leadership, Kant and his administration originally built both the garden and fountain during his first term as mayor.

“I did everything I could to help this city,” Kant said. “So proud of this city and I’m always there to do what I can to make it better.”
