I’m in zone 7, PA. I bought my home 3 yrs ago & then almost immediately had to get the ground regraded due to water in the basement issues. Had major issues with the guy that was doing the work & had to have someone else finish. They put out grass seed, I only had dirt at that point. It’s been growing. But I hate grass & am in fact allergic to it. I found this board accidentally a few months ago & have been trying to educate myself. I have not raked my leaves from the fall (did that last year too but wound up raking them last spring because I thought I had to in order to plant gardens). I went out yesterday to see what plants/shrubs seemed to be healthy & noticed some sections of my back yard no longer covered by grass but now have buttercups, clover and purple dead nettle. I planted none of that but would like to encourage more of its expansion. I also have a large pile of rocks from the original landscaper (he was using them for a patio but never finished & the new people weren’t going to use them) and there is an area that sill collects water (thankfully away from the house). Any ideas on how to encourage the growth of the not grass? My plan is to have no lawn and eventually plant native plants for my bird & insect neighbors.

Fig buttercup and purple dead nettle are both highly invasive and choking out natives. You should remove them. I’d dig that entire area up – and dig it up deep because those fig buttercups are deep – put down new soil and mulch and plant what you want.
