This is an intensively cultivated one-acre village garden created by an architect/ plant collector.

The garden has more than 1,400 species of plants (mostly perennials, shrubs, and small trees) arranged in many gardens: a long double border, two woodland gardens, a pool garden hidden by a rollicking serpent-pruned tapestry hedge. Many other hedges as well as rock walls (all quarried on site) add their charm.

A main cottage and guest cottage with several other outbuildings are all purpose-designed to be subservient to the dominant garden. The owner is the chairman emeritus of the board of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

The garden was published in Jane Garmey’s Private Gardens of Connecticut and other publications. This New York/New England gardener is the third generation in his family to have significant gardens … on the Gulf Coast of Texas! The garden is published in the January/February 2022 issue of Fine Gardening magazine.
