Pearl’s Garden celebrates a young girl interested in gardening, and bringing together a family.
A recently-released children’s book, “Pearl’s Garden,” celebrates urban gardens and how they bring people together.
Carolyn Olson is the author and illustrator. She lives in Duluth and found some inspiration from the Fond du Lac band’s Gitigaan program, which ensures elders get plants every spring.
The main character, Pearl, makes a backyard garden with the help of the city’s gardener. When it came time to harvest, Pearl needed help, but everyone was busy. She made a fresh salsa with her vegetables to entice her family to help her pick.
“It’s a story about a family supporting each other as they can and growing your own garden, which is health and good,” Olson said. “It’s a hopeful story about working together. Neighbors come for a potluck at the end and start thinking maybe they could grow a garden too.”
Olson has several book events coming up:
March 28: Zenith BookstoreMay 16: Bookstore at Fitger’sMay 23: Whole Foods Co-Op (Denfeld)June 13: Fond du Lac Gitigaan ProgramJune 27: Split Rock Lighthouse
The book is available through the Minnesota Historical Society Press.
