Spring is the season for a wondrous tulip display, but there could be a number of issues that gardeners face that result in the flowers drooping.Tulips can droop for a multitude of reasons, including dehydration in the soil, overwatering or poor drainage in the soil, and being grown in the wrong conditions.

Gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish recently shared some key tips on how you can identify the source of the drooping and how to fix it. Ish said: “Now don’t worry, you don’t have to say ‘this hasn’t happened to me before’, ‘cause in the gardening world, this is actually incredibly common. And there’s a few easy signs to know what you’ve done wrong.”

If you’ve planted your tulip bulbs in a shallow planter, there’s not been a lot of room for the flowers to grow. Ish explained that drooping happens as there’s nothing to “anchor” the plants down, and in turn, aren’t sturdy enough when they bloom.

It’s worth investing in a deep planter to allow the bulb to grow more underneath the soil, which should give them enough strength to stay upright. Gardeners’ World advised planting the bulbs at least 20cm below the soil’s surface, and 5cm apart from one another.

Another issue is that if tulips are left in a shady spot, they won’t bloom to their full potential. The expert advised keeping the tulips in a place where they can get a generous amount of sunshine.

If the tulips are pale in colour, it usually means they haven’t gotten enough sunlight.

Lastly, you want to make sure that the soil the tulips are planted in is full of moisture. The lack of moisture will lead to drooping.

However, you want to make sure that the soil is not too wet, as the bulbs can end up rotting. A well-drained soil will keep the bulbs hydrated without rotting.

If the tulips are still drooping after you’ve tried these tricks, Ish suggested using plant stakes, tying the flowers to them for more support. This could take a long time, depending on how many tulips you’re growing.

His other suggestion is to cut the flower at the base of the stem and use the tulips in a bouquet or a vase.

You can also get on top of next year’s garden by planting tulip bulbs between mid to late autumn. Gardeners’ World explained that some tulips flower earlier than others, with early-flowering varieties blooming from very late March to April, mid-season bulbs in April to May, and late-flowering ones bloom in May.

Gardeners should plant the bulbs in a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained soil. If you have heavy clay or sandy soils in the garden, the experts recommend incorporating plenty of well-rotted organic matter, like manure, compost, or leaf mould, before planting.

Gardeners World said: “Tulips also grow very well in pots, in peat-free multi-purpose compost.”
