Spring is the time for a spectacular tulip display, but gardeners may encounter several problems that cause the flowers to droop. Tulips can wilt due to various reasons, including soil dehydration, overwatering or poor soil drainage, and unsuitable growing conditions.

Gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish recently offered some crucial advice on how to identify the cause of the drooping and how to rectify it. Ish said: “Now don’t worry, you don’t have to say ‘this hasn’t happened to me before’, ’cause in the gardening world, this is actually incredibly common. And there’s a few easy signs to know what you’ve done wrong.”

If your tulip bulbs are planted in a shallow planter, they won’t have much room to grow. Ish explained that drooping occurs because there’s nothing to “anchor” the plants down, making them unstable when they bloom.

Investing in a deep planter to allow the bulb to grow more beneath the soil should provide them with enough strength to remain upright. Gardeners’ World recommends planting the bulbs at least 20cm below the soil’s surface and 5cm apart from each other.

Another problem is that if tulips are kept in a shady area, they won’t bloom to their full potential. The expert suggested placing the tulips where they can receive ample sunshine, reports the Express.

If the tulips appear pale, it usually indicates they haven’t received sufficient sunlight.

Finally, it’s crucial to ensure that the soil in which the tulips are planted is sufficiently moist. A lack of moisture can result in drooping.

However, avoid overly wet soil as this can cause the bulbs to rot. Well-drained soil will keep the bulbs hydrated without causing decay.

If the tulips continue to droop despite these measures, Ish recommended using plant stakes and tying the flowers to them for additional support. This process could be time-consuming, depending on the number of tulips you’re cultivating.

Another suggestion from him is to cut the flower at the stem base and use the tulips in a bouquet or vase.

You can also prepare for next year’s garden by planting tulip bulbs between mid to late autumn. According to Gardeners’ World, some tulips bloom earlier than others, with early-flowering varieties blooming from very late March to April, mid-season bulbs in April to May, and late-flowering ones bloom in May.

Gardeners should plant the bulbs in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. If your garden has heavy clay or sandy soils, experts recommend incorporating plenty of well-rotted organic matter, such as manure, compost, or leaf mould, before planting.

Gardeners World said: “Tulips also grow very well in pots, in peat-free multi-purpose compost.”
