Question why do people think its weird that i want to raise my own meat? Im 17 and my parents think im mental because i wanna raise meat rabbits and when i wanted to try to butcher some roosters they made me just sell them?!?
When did going to Walmart become normal and living off the land knowing where your food comes from become a crazy idea. I want to grow my own food and live off what i make but when i try to plan seeds or butcher a drake im called crazy or weird-

Bio checks out.
Aren’t all animals made of meat?
All good , I grew up raising beef , my friends were all city kids, it was hard to explain sometimes but generally everyone kinda was fascinated with farming.
Industrial farming is a horror show, that’s what’s pushing me towards homesteading. I know I’d hate to kill an animal I raised but at least I can give them a good life first.
Keep being you! You will find a tribe of like minded individuals one day, until then just keep your head up and keep reading 📚. Nothing wrong with wanting to raise meat animals, it’s very noble imo. Not everyone has what it takes to butcher animals, in the past year I’ve done rabbits, chickens, ducks, raccoons, squirrels, and a goat. I have a pig planned soon.
Yes you are incredibly weird. No one in all of humanity has ever thought to raise animals with the intent of eating them. Frankly a ridiculous idea, no one will ever take it seriously.
My friend start hanging around where people like us hang around. Fed stores, farmers markets, homesteading shows. Talk to people and ask questions. People love to talk about themselves. Ask about their farms etc. before you know it you’ll have lots of friends in this space.
We do hogs and chickens, hunted elk. Do be deterred by others opinions. Like another poster said, you’ll find a tribe of like minded people.
You’re asking this in a homesteading sub? No. Not a single person here raises animals for meat.
Not weird at all. Good for you for broadening your perspective.
I grew up vegetarian and now raise my own meat because factory farming is beyond tolerable and honestly eating what I raise has lowered my meat consumption and that’s good for the planet as well as my health. Meat rabbits are delicious, especially if you like dark meat. Turkeys are a profitable product and extra roosters should be culled for soup if they are not perfect.
I deeply enjoy skinning birds, especially roosters, and while my family probably thinks it’s weird, they’re super supportive and ask questions that no doubt makes them squeamish. I’m working on turning the better ones into pelts.
You do you, if you want to raise meat you absolutely should.
Good luck to you- ignore the chatter, find your people, you’ll be fine…
So brave
It is deeply important to me that I raise my own meat. Usually, it saves me money too, which is nice. Chickens don’t… but industrial poultry farming is a shit show, so I’m good paying a little extra.
As a side note, everything somebody does is weird to somebody else. Be kind and do what makes sense to you and makes you happy and you’ll go far. Trying to please everyone at once is impossible, so I don’t even bother.
