With the clocks set to change soon and the sun beginning to shine again, many of us are eager to get back outdoors as quickly as possible. However, one hurdle that gardening enthusiasts often face after a long, damp and chilly winter is a lawn that appears rather worse for wear.

It’s an issue I grapple with every spring: insufficient sunlight leaves my grass looking quite sorry for itself. Nevertheless, it’s easily rectified with some grass seed – and I’ve stumbled upon a striking deal that allows you to grab a 1.5kg box for less than £1.

The Verve grass seed mix usually retails at £16 at B&Q, but there’s a lesser-known offer that can effectively reduce the price to 73p.

This comes courtesy of the money-saving website TopCashback, where new members can enjoy a £15 sign-up cashback bonus when they spend £15 at a participating retailer. This means that for new TopCashback members and all B&Q customers, the price will drop to 73p once cashback is factored in.

B&Q states that the box has an average total coverage area of 60m2 and is “durable and hard-wearing”. Young grass should start sprouting within one to two weeks, whilst the non-perennial ryegrass mixtures may take 14-21 days, reports Wales Online.

Reviews posted so far have mostly been very positive. One stated: “Bought this to patch in areas where the dogs have been running. Spreads well, noticed growth about two weeks later, so really happy.”

Another customer commented: “Great coverage and good growth. Great colour and time to germinate was shorter than the box said. We’ve given it three cuts, and it looks good. Versatile for dogs and kids.”

A third added: “Excellent seed, took around 6 days to germinate, and now we have a lovely lawn.” Meanwhile, another remarked: “This grass seed is of great quality and very fast growing. Highly recommend and worked out at a good price compared to other brands.”

Whilst the bulk of reviews were favourable, some limitations were highlighted, including one purchaser who stated they were “very disappointed with the result”. Another removed stars, noting they were “waiting for results”.

Numerous alternative grass seed products are available elsewhere, including on Amazon, where a 1.4kg box of Pronto Seed, providing 84m2 coverage, costs £14.49. It’s described as “durable” for high-traffic areas and safe for dogs and cats.

Meanwhile, Wickes offers Gro-Sure’s Shady Lawn Seed, formulated for areas receiving limited sunlight. However, a 300g £9 box only covers 10m2, making it more expensive than standard varieties.
