  1. Very popular here in Mediterranean Malta. Every farmer and amateur farmer with a bit of land sows fava beans directly into the soil. Our winters are mild so sowing starts in December for an early harvest and ends in late February. The plants struggle past mid-May and the beans turn very pale green to yellow while still developing in the pod. It starts to get too hot. The harvest here always suffers because the islands are infested with a parasitic plant (Orobanche) which decimates 20% and upwards of the crop. Sowing late (February) limits the infestation.

  2. @GrowVeg thank you! I have two questions.. Do you ever get a black disease on your plants? What do you plant with them as companion plants?

  3. Best protein? As far as I know you cannot grow a cow from soil. And no. Plant proteins are not the best at anything. They are poor people nutrition. Learn how much humans absorb from them. It's okay to like them. It's not okay to spread misinformation.

  4. That does sound fun. I think my garden is full up this year, though. Maybe if I'm feeling uninspired next summer I'll try it.

  5. I plant all seeds in old cardboard toilet rolls that i ask my family to save then bang straight into the ground with no root disturbance 😁

  6. Why are these always fulllll of aphids tho. What makes it so that the aphids just magically appear in the millions on fava er field beans. And why does it never happen to any other plant.

  7. Hi Ben! @GrowVeg I love your fun and very informative videos. Simple and playful, not over the top. VERY PLEASANT!

I'm in the Philippines so not all of the content apply to my area but they are very much adaptable and still full of wisdom. For instance it was in your vid where i first came across the spike ollas. After a lot.of searchung i finally found some and now my grpwbag veggie garden is powered by them! Thank you for that idea!

On a different note one which might be of interest to you. One of the gardener-farmers i follow came out with this video comment which had me shocked amd alarmed. I sent a comment suggestion what if you all came together to advocate for authenticity and ethical practices. Maybe even consider having a identifiable stamp on your vids espousing those shared values. Do consider. I will send this same message to all the other content creators i've been following in the hope the idea catches on.

Keep on doing what you do. Keep inspiring and keep sharing. 😊

Do keep doing what you do! Make gardening fun!

    Here's the vid i mentioned.

  8. Did you know that these are the only "original" European beans? These are very popular in parts of Germany, but we sow them in late autumn for overwintering or in February. Oh, and we saw them directly into the soil. They tend to be a favorite for black aphids, but you can control this pest by pinching of the tops of the plants as soon as the aphids start to appear. Of course this is only viable if the plants are big enough by then, hence the early sowing. 😊

  9. My broad beans are starting to come through, but I planted mine directly into the bed, as I was very late in planting them this year, I meant to plant them in November.

  10. Actually; my gay lover.. the best protein to grow at home is chickens and fresh eggs everymorning that you let graze on insects and worms.
