Tree stump that’s been around for around 2 decades disintegrating


Is it just rotting? Bugs? Termites? I don’t know what type of tree it is. In West Virginia. What’s happening?

    Yes to all 3. Also woodpeckers getting at said bugs.

    Sometimes on here people will ask about a tree that has all the limbs removed but the majority of the trunk left. I forget what the word for the leftover tree is, but it’s beneficial for wildlife. This one is quite lovely.
