This Historic Garden 30 Minutes From SF Has A Unique 'Weeping' Cherry Tree That's About To Hit Peak Bloom

Woodside’s historic Filoli House & Garden is one of our favorite day trips to take from San Francisco, especially in the spring when blooming flowers adorn every inch of the property.

The magnificent Weeping Higan Cherry tree bloom is highly anticipated by the garden’s most eager guests, with its distinctive, graceful branches creating a dramatic backdrop against the other spring flowers.

Filoli told us that the weeping cherry tree is beginning to flower, and will likely reach peak bloom towards the end of this week or next week.

Cherry trees and more spring blooms at Filoli

Filoli’s extensive flower blooms, including several different cherry tree varieties, all peak at different moments throughout the spring. However, April is usually the best month to catch the best range of spring flowers blooming all at once.

According to Filoli’s bloom calendar, we can expect flowering crabapple, cherry, and pear trees to bloom through April, overlapping nicely with peak bloom for the tulips, irises, wisteria, peonies, daffodils, and more. Other tree varieties to seek out include flowering plums, pears, peaches, and magnolias.

Visitors come from all over the Bay Area to see Filoli’s abundant tulip bloom, which features dozens of varieties, as well as its bright yellow daffodil meadow, where you’ll find more flowering trees.

The historic Filoli property dates back to 1917, including a grand mansion with 56 rooms and extensive grounds. Spring brings a packed calendar of charming tea parties in April and May, wine tastings through June, floral arranging workshops, live music, and more.
