So this is only my second year growing vegetables… and for my 1 household I have somehow I’ve ended up with:
- 5 different varieties of seed potatoes
- 22 containers of potatoes
- 150 garlic
- 120 onions
- 20 bunches of spring onions
- 40 leeks
- 60 carrots
- 30 parsnips
- A full herb bed
- A lot more fruit and veggies to be planted through the season
- And about 20 varieties of flowers currently germinating inside the house
Oh… and I’ve just casually dug a 2.5m x 1.5m hole in the garden because apparently I now also need a wildlife pond??
Like… who do I think I am?🤦♂️
It started so innocently last year. Now I’m out here calculating planting densities and wondering if I can squeeze in one more crop somewhere.
Does anyone else fall into this trap where every empty bit of space feels like wasted potential??
Also… is there some kind of AA equivalent for gardening addiction or do we just accept this is our life now?
Please tell me I’m not the only one 😅

No, your plan sounds completely reasonable 🙂
I do the same, then I end up with massive harvests of potatoes, tomatoes, onions all at once,
eat as much as I can until I get sick of them, then give the rest to neighbors and family..
My spouse asked me what new plant I’m planning on this year. I think he’s finally caught on to my shenanigans, mostly because he often ends up having to help locate space for whatever I “need”. Last year it was 4 fruit trees.
And honestly, I had no new plant species planned this year, which probably shocked both of us.
There are worse addictions to have. At least we are getting fresh air and touching grass.
My 2nd year as well, after just trying a couple things last year, and I somehow ended up going from a small in ground garden to 6 – 4×8, 2 – 2×8, and 2 – 2×4 raised beds with drip irrigation. Planning on tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, carrots, sweet corn, potatoes in grow bags, strawberries, a couple pumpkins, watermelon and green beans. Oh, and a row of raspberries.
Also, I’ve been planning a pond for next year 😅 it’s a real problem.
I grew potatoes in a bucket once. Today I own a small market garden selling vegetables and flowers and I’m considering buying the property next to mine to expand 🤣
Do your thing!
Sounds about right.
I told my husband I had a black thumb. (6 ish years ago)
So he dared me to kill a hens n chick’s succulent.
Then I ended up with shelves of propagation trays. (5 ish years ago)
Then I asked my cousin for veggie seeds. (3 years ago)
Now I’m convinced I can renovate this five acre property that my grandma tended 70 years ago and do what she did.
My living room has snapdragons, peas, kohlrabi, strawflower, coleus, cabbage..
My kitchen has stock flower and house plants
My backyard has two giant tubs of iris waiting for homes
My garden is starting to bloom with hyacinth, tulips are poking up, lily is coming up, larkspur is coming up
I planted a kale garden yesterday (and I don’t even eat kale lol but the leaves are awesome)
If I didn’t have 3 little kids who need an outdoor space to play, my whole yard would be vegetable garden…
(Our yard is fairly small, and I have almost all of the full sunlight space taken up with my garden)
Having trouble setting up a User Flair – so this is a repost?
LOL sounds great!
If you have the time and this has become a passion for you, go for it!!!
I also note that many of your crops are pretty low maintenance. Smart.
Enjoy!
