Hi everyone, I'm looking for some expert advice on my Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) hedge in Italy.
The Situation:
One plant in the hedge recently died and was removed. Now, the neighboring plant is showing signs of distress:
– Aerial/Adventitious Roots: Strange orange-colored root initials are erupting from the base of the trunk (see photos).
– Leaf Yellowing: The canopy is thinning and turning yellow (chlorosis).
Conditions: The base of the trunk was accidentally buried under a thick layer of wet leaf litter for several months. I have just cleared it to let the root flare breathe.
My Concern:
I suspect Armillaria (Honey Fungus) might be spreading from the dead plant to this one. However, I'm wondering if these "roots" are just a reaction to the high humidity from the leaf mulch or if they are a "last gasp" response to root rot.
Questions:
Based on the photos of the trunk flare, does this look like typical adventitious rooting or a symptom of fungal infection?
Should I be worried about the rest of the hedge?
Any insights or diagnostic steps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
