CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — With spring underway in Central Illinois, one garden store in Champaign is bringing people out to enjoy those first blooms.

Prairie Gardens hosted Pansy Palooza this weekend, which put early spring plants, like pansies, front and center. The event also included workshops like water-color painting and early spring floral swag.

Champaign enjoys record high temperatures on first day of spring

Prairie Gardens employee Kathy Richey said when it starts to get warm like this, it is time to start thinking about gardening. But, it is important to make sure you buy the right plants for the season.

“Everybody is probably feeling the same way I am, being an avid gardener is. You just get very excited once the weather starts to warm up, to see color and to kind of get a jump start on things. Pansies are a great way to add that spring color, because they can take the cooler temperatures that we’re still going to be experiencing in the evening,” Richey said.

Richey also said now is also a good time to grab bagged compost to add to your garden, giving it an extra boost before spring is in full bloom.
