How close should you plant vegetables? In this short video I show the spacings I use for carrots, spinach, onions, peas, lettuce and beetroot, with examples from my dig and no dig trial beds.
Spacing plants well makes a big difference to growth and harvests. I share examples of how different vegetables fit together in one bed, and how planting small plants fairly close together can still give excellent results.
Examples from my dig / no dig trial, of mixed vegetables in one bed.
See my book Grow Together for more planting ideas, especially second crops from succession, plantings, and interplanting.

Beautiful garden 🪴 in
What do you use for your wire hoops please?
The way I do the majority is 1 hand fork apart. I have yet to follow a packet of seeds advice on spacing!
Hi are these direct sown into the ground?
Obrigado ❤
Wonderful!!! I have not planted anything, I was going to but we had a cold snap and BAZINGA, this morning, it is snowing hahaha,
plastic tops like this degrade and accumulate micro plastics year after year. they leach into foods which then stay in your body and brain. do without
I smile every time I see your garden.
I am looking forward to seeing your plants as they grow. What can I plant in between garlic? I took up a big space that I usually grow in. Arugula? Or nothing? Thank you. 😊
The garden and weather is looking so lovely and serene there. Cheers!
The Cole War has ended; Sir Charles wins the space race!
Hi Charles 👋
Where do you source those longer hoops from?
You are a treasure! Thank you!
That is helpful thank you. i planted my early potatoes already now i think i put them too close together!
Even though I have gardened for 40 yrs , Every spring trying to decide 🤔where to plant everything can be overwhelming 😵💫🤪 thank you for the spacing it helps a lot. I like the point you made in the one video, that you don’t bother with rotating crops, this will solve my spring conundrum 🪴
Charles, those pea rows look quite wide apart. I sow mine closer so that they can grow up both sides of some chicken wire for support. Have I been doing it wrong all this time?
Thank you for including inches and feet♥️ so helpful for your American followers 😁
I love your videos because the common garden methods are so rigorous and medieval. Your dynamic, intelligent no dig approach with multisowing makes sense and is fun!
Can you do a follow up video showing the onions & peas together? I always leave my onions away from peas. Beautiful display❤
Hi Charles, thank you for making this clear for spacing 😊👌🏼
I wanted to point out that in one of your potato videos you did you mentioned about how they can come up again….I've had exactly the same..they self grew!! 😂
