Hey everyone! Seeking advice on when to plant my jug grown Virginia bluebell seed. I’m aware this plant goes dormant around June so I feel like I should put them in the ground earlier rather than later.

I live in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

I’m a beginner gardner, but I would say not now. The sprout is too young and has not grown robust enough roots to be transplanted.

  2. The general rule of thumb for most plants is to pot or put them in the ground when they have at least 2-3 sets of true leaves unless they don’t transplant well (direct sow if you can for those kinds and let nature take its course). They will likely have true leaves far before their dormant period, and if they have a few weeks before that time frame to go dormant and send energy to the roots, they should be okay.

Edit to add: keep the transplant area moist, not soupy. First year sleep, second year creep, third year leap.
