Hi Everyone, I am a single woman and recently got a small house with a very overgrown yard. The weeds are taller than I am and the grass is catching up. I am on a budget, so I’m trying to do it on my own. This is my first yard and I have no experience with gardening or landscaping.
So far, I’ve purchased (and been using) garden shears, a shovel, weed wacker and rake. I use the shears to cut down long grass enough so the weed wacker can take over. At that point I’m able to see all the new weeds that are growing under the grass (yay! Such a gift to discover there’s a whole new battle beneath the war you’ve been fighting. lol). I use the shovel to dig the weeds out, then rake it all up. That’s been my process so far. It’s a ton of work and I feel like I’m barely making a dent in it. I’d love your feedback and suggestions on ways to do this more effective.
The pictures are a little deceptively because the grass is actually 4 to 6 feet long, it’s just horizontal at the moment. It snowed last weekend and the weight of the snow caused the tall grass to fall over its self.

Thank you so much for your time and help 🙏

Rent some goats
Even if you can’t afford an ongoing landscaping service, you may find it’s worth paying someone to come out and give it a good cleaning so you can start new
GOATS!!!!!
If you’re like my wife you take your 100 series John Deere garden tractor, throw the deck on the ground and start chopping. GLHF!
Get a quality string trimmer and get a chest sling to help balance the weight. It can be very therapeutic. Start In one corner and just start cutting thru it. Listen to some music and you will be amazed at how quickly you can see progress and get a work out.
Hire someone to come mow and mulch the clippings one time, keep it mowed after that while you target and remove problem species and introduce desirable vegetation.
Goat’s
Goats my dude
Invasive teasels? Start by collecting the seed pods by hand.
Everyone that’s saying goats is just regurgitating internet bs.
Hire a new landscaper to mow it down two/ three times then you can take it over yourself. It’s a small enough overgrown area that after it gets mulched down a time or two you can start over.
Cheapest option, if available if your area (near a major city/ suburb) is LawnStarter or Lawn Love. Be aware, if you go this route, you’re severely taking advantage of a new business owner who is sub contracting for this company. They are the uber of lawn care. TIP THEM.
Or buy a string trimmer, you need one anyway as a home owner, and whack it all down. Then you can mow as usual if you start mowing two/ three days later and follow up a few times within 7 days of one another.
