im bawling my eyes out right now, ive been nurturing 2 trilliums in my yard and they were starting to open flowers. this evening I came home and the neighbors had mowed it down. it's technically on my property but the people they hired mowed part of our yard

I had put rocks all around it, they mowed those too. all that is left are 2 red stems and shredded leaves

I need to move it but I dont know how to do it safely so it will keep living, when to do it, or where to put it.

  1. Tell your neighbors the people they hired need to stay off your property and put a little wire fence or something around it. I’ve had luck moving trilliums from my parents’ house, but I’d be very hesitant to do so when they were already damaged because the shock might be too much.

You want to move spring ephemeroids when they’re dormant. Not during their brief blooming and growing season.

Insane to mow over such an obvious barrier. Trilliums spread by rhizomes. So while they are donezo for this season, the roots system is still intact and they should come back next season.

Stick some rebar in the ground and teach them a lesson if they try again

Trilliums move pretty easily, apparently. Not sure they’ll bloom quickly afterward. I’d let them go fully dormant before you dig them up and move them, though.

Yeah don’t move them right now. Also that’s a shitty lawn care service. Put up stakes to mark your yard and tell your neighbors to inform the company.
