WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The war in Iran is affecting more than gas prices — lawn fertilizer costs are also on the rise, and local gardeners could feel the impact later this year.
Conflict in Iran has disrupted shipping along the Strait of Hormuz, the route used to transport resources, including raw fertilizer materials, from the Middle East. The disruption has caused suppliers to raise their prices.
Wichita garden center buys ahead
Jeremy Johnson, president of Johnson’s Garden Center in Wichita, said the business is already seeing a difference.
“We kind of saw that the fertilizer prices spiking,” Johnson said. “And so we went ahead and bought all of our fertilizer for the rest of the year for our lawn care customers. So hopefully we’re able to maintain those prices stable through the rest of 2026 because we were able to buy before price increases have happened for later in the year.”
Johnson said the business secured inventory for spring and summer sales, but uncertainty remains for the fall season.
“Looking at our lawn fertilizers, that’s something that’s going to have a…probably will have a direct impact to what we’re doing and what our customers are seeing,” Johnson said. “A lot of those that we’ve secured inventory for the spring and summer sales, but looking at what that’s going to happen for fall and winterizer type sales upcoming later this year.”
Johnson said shoppers may not see a surge in prices this season, but that could change within the next year given current supply costs.
