FARGO — The improving weather this week may have you looking toward the spring gardening season.

An NDSU horticulture expert explains what you should sow in soil.

NDSU’s Don Kinzler said you can start planting seeds for tomatoes and peppers inside now, to prepare to bring them outside later in the season.

For successful growth, Kinzler says you should put them under LED lights in the basement.

Even if it seems like spring is finally here, you should think twice before bringing those plants outside.

“The main thing that I was taught years ago by my mother, who was a great gardener, was don’t trust spring, even if April is very warm and very early, we could still get some May frost. So I learned early to be cautious with spring,” he said.

For planning spring landscapes, Kinzler said garden centers are a great place to start.
