With warmer weather just around the corner, it’s the best time to get your garden into shape. From adding plants and flowers to introducing new garden furniture, revamping an outdoor space can increase a home’s value and appeal. According to the experts at Harbour Lifestyle, a pergola is rapidly becoming the must-have addition to homes.

They help to create sheltered areas for dining, relaxing and entertaining that effectively extend the home into the garden. According to the experts, buyers are willing to pay up to 20% more for a home with gardens designed for year-round use.

With the average UK house price around £300,000, that could translate into as much as £60,000 in added value for homes, according to the experts.

The experts said: “The average pergola costs around £2,500 in the UK, a modest investment compared with many home improvements.”

The rise of pergolas reflects a change in how Brits use their outdoor spaces, with them no longer seen as purely for planting. Gardens are now being used as functional extensions of the home, and pergolas can help to create this.

Andrew White from Harbour Lifestyle said: “Over the past few years, our relationship with our outdoor spaces has shifted dramatically. Gardens aren’t just somewhere to host the occasional barbecue anymore – they are increasingly seen as an extension of the home itself.

“Pergolas help create that indoor-outdoor flow. By introducing a covered, structured area, homeowners can bring sofas, dining sets, lighting and heating outdoors, effectively transforming a patio into a fully functioning alfresco living space.

“Because of this versatility, pergolas are quickly becoming one of the most desirable features for house hunters.”

How pergolas enhance a garden

Zoning the space

Andrew said: “Just as interiors benefit from clearly defined areas, gardens also feel more considered when different ‘zones’ are introduced. A pergola creates a natural focal point for outdoor dining or lounging, making the garden feel structured and thoughtfully designed.”

Making the garden appear larger

The expert said strategically placing a pergola towards the middle or far end of a garden can visually extend the space. Andrew added: “By drawing the eye outward, it encourages a sense of depth and scale – even in smaller gardens.”

Encouraging indoor-outdoor living

Andrew said: “Pergolas blur the boundary between house and garden, particularly when styled with soft furnishings, lighting, and heating. This seamless transition is something modern buyers actively look for when viewing properties.”

Extending garden usability

With flexible layouts, integrated lighting and heating, and weather-resistant materials, many modern pergolas can be used year-round. This increased usability is exactly why buyers are willing to pay extra for homes with well-designed outdoor spaces.
