This April will offer a rare chance to visit a beautiful garden which has been brought to vibrant life over 35 years. High Trees is a private garden in Northumberland which opens only by arrangement for visits between spring and summer.
But it is to have a special open day on April 12 – to be followed by another opportunity to visit on June 7, both events offering a chance to see its wildlife-friendly attractions and what are described as ‘unusual’ shrubs alongside the likes of rock gardens, a ‘tiny meadow’ and terrace full of sun-loving flowers. As might be expected from the name, there are tall trees there too among the mix of woodland and alpine plants.
High Trees, tucked away at South Park half a mile south of Hexham, is described as a ‘specialist half-acre plantsman’s garden’. Owner John Richards is a former professor of botany at the University of Newcastle who ran Moorbank Botanic Garden in the city.
Over the years, he and his wife Sheila have created their own oasis of calm. John is a fan of alpines and has travelled the world to see plants in their native habitats.
At High Trees he has grown plants from Alpine Garden Society seed. The result of is a layered effect throughout the garden’s lay-out, with various height plants and blooms.
They include lilies, magnolias, rhododendrons and Himalayan poppies plus others with lovely names such as euphorbias, bistort and geums as well as the likes of tree peonies, ferns and tiny alpines. The National Garden Scheme is promoting the open days while also highlighting free spring openings at various other sites, which, as previously reported, have included some local stunners in past years.
High Trees will be open on both days between 1pm and 5pm. Admission will be £5 for adults; free for children and those interested in visiting the garden can book here for the April 12 date and here for the June 7 opening..
