Spring is finally here with brighter skies and warmer temperatures. Now the weather is getting nicer, many gardeners are focusing their attention on their outdoor space.

But revamping your garden in spring can be a lengthy process with the arrival of persistent weeds. Many experts reckon it’s crucial to take action now as this window can potentially banish them for good. Not only are weeds unattractive, they’re irritating while taking a lot of time and error to completely eliminate. Now Pim Dickson, Senior Horticultural Content Manager at Fothergill’s, recently outlined what gardeners need to know.

With thousands of Instagram followers, the brand’s guidance is crucial to follow.

Pim explained: “The first job is dealing with all that moss and those pesky weeds that have crept in during winter. Give your lawn a good rake to lift them out; it’s surprisingly satisfying work.

“This isn’t just about making things look tidy. Getting rid of moss and weeds means your grass can actually breathe again, with air, light and water reaching the soil where it’s needed.”

She continued: “If you only have a few weeds here and there, then simply dig them out, ensuring you get as much of the roots as you can. A narrow spade hoe will help you do this with ease, or alternatively a hand trowel.

“Follow these straightforward steps, and you’ll have a lawn that’s ready for summer, whether that’s family barbecues, kids playing or simply somewhere nice to look at with your morning cuppa.”

What you might not realise is tackling weeds sooner brings better results. As spring arrives, certain tasks really need completing without delay.

There’s solid reasoning behind taking swift action. Early spring actually ranks amongst the ideal periods for removing weeds because the ground is moist and yielding.

This makes for straightforward, complete root removal. Eliminating them before they develop extensive root systems or produce seeds stops them multiplying later on, and it’s crucial to address weeds early whilst they’re still developing.

How is this effective?

Spring’s soft soil means those pesky weeds will pull out smoothly, offering a greater likelihood of extracting the full root system.

It also helps halt propagation since weeds haven’t yet produced seeds, so removing them now cuts down future generations. They’re also considerably smaller during this period, making them far more manageable to deal with.

In fact, the optimal time to tackle them is following a hearty spring downpour. Getting stuck in during March is one of the most effective strategies for preventing them from proliferating and dominating your garden later in the year.

This month is deemed prime weeding season as winter annuals are reaching maturity and spring weeds are just starting to sprout, rendering them small, feeble and easy to uproot before they establish deep roots.

So if you want a weed-free garden this summer, take action now. It’s a task well worth undertaking to enhance the appearance of your outdoor space.
