I started my seeds in paper towels in a bag and put them in this once they were about 1 inch. What's likely to go wrong? I am trying to see if I can get away without using any media like rockwool or clay.

Seems like a lot of work.and sprouts need to be placed just so to touch the water. Why not use a grow mat of some sort?or keep them on the paper towel?

Interesting idea. As long as they’re staying healthy, that seems pretty cool. The only thing the rocks or other media do are support the plant. I wonder if they’ll tip over when they’re taller? If so, you could make the post a little longer and anchor the base of the stem to it.

I’m about to set up a tight gridded 2 inch net pot holder for seedlings. I just have a big tote full of garden soil I paid $12 for and start everything in that and then just leave it in there when I plant it. No transplanting required. But it definitely takes more space than your method.

    I use almost no media…

I start on a reusable spongy cloth, so I can change and reuse that. When the tap root comes out, I move to perlite, which is technically media, but I can reuse it quite a bit. When I go to nutrient it’s sort of a friction fit with rubber mat material.

I’m interested to learn whether what you’re trying works or not.

Edit: I looked closer at the setup. I think your biggest challenge will be contamination with mold/algae, so you’ll want to watch out for that.

Too much work for me, whereas I just use fine grade perlite and vermiculite and just pull them off easily and a swish in the water to set them free. Can reuse with sterilization after. Have fun and let us know how it goes.
