British gardeners can grow “loads” of tomatoes using one simple method, an expert has said. Tomatoes are a staple in many British fridges. Not only are they a major component in many delicious salads, but they are also used to make dishes that are favourites for Brits, including pastas and curries. Many Brits like to grow their own tomatoes rather than buying them in the supermarket, and it is actually easier than many people realise.

Gardening expert and author of Grow Your Own Groceries, Simon Akeroyd, has shared the simple way he actually uses tomatoes from the supermarket to grow even more in his own garden. After one small purchase in his local store, he eventually gets a huge number of tomatoes that take little effort to grow. In a TikTok video, he points out that tomatoes are already full of seeds, and that is all you need to grow your own at home. He also says that this time of the year (early spring) is the best for sewing tomato seeds, urging gardeners to act now.

First, the expert cuts a tomato into slices and grabs a plastic supermarket fruit container with holes in the bottom. Two slices are then placed over a layer of compost.

Then, cover that with more compost. Akeroyd says that in just a few days, you should have “loads of baby tomato plants”.

To make sure they grow as well as they can, he says gardeners should “prick out the seedlings when they produce true leaves”. Also, you should hold them by the leaf and not the stem when you are transferring them to larger, individual pots.

You will have fresh and plump tomatoes by the summertime if you sow these seeds now. This means that when you are hosting a barbecue in your garden, or you’re making tasty and fresh summer salads, you will have your own tomatoes to use.

An array of similar hacks to help people grow their own groceries at home is found in the expert’s gardening book, which was released last year. He instructs people how to grow their own produce using what they already bought in the supermarket.

People shared their thoughts on the clever hack in the comments section of the video. One person wrote: “There is nothing better than fresh from the garden tomatoes.”

Another joked: “All well and good but we need some sunshine first.”
