If you’re wondering what to plant with hellebores in a shade garden, this video walks through the layering approach I use in my own garden.
Hellebores are one of the best early spring flowers for shade gardens, but they look their best when they’re planted and layered with companion plants that carry the garden through the entire season.
In this video, I’m sharing how I design shade garden beds around hellebores so they feel full and intentional from late winter through fall. We’ll talk about layering early bloomers, foliage plants that fill in during summer, and shrubs and small trees that provide structure and seasonal color.

1st time planting Hellebores!! So excited!! If the rabbits and squirrels leave them alone, it may go well…. (Digging to the roots) Thank you for the video!!!
This was so helpful – thank you! I'm so guilty of planting one or two types of shade plants in different areas after learning about them. I so appreciate how you pulled it all together in layers and bloom season successions. 🎉😊
Excellent video, Stacy. I’m so loving hellebores the past few years. They are just so expensive. I try to gradually add to my collection each year. I love all your suggestions along with Sun King Aralia and I’m also trying to get the European ginger started in my shade garden. I love it so much.
Thanks for the tips ☺
