Spinach is really frost hardy and freeze tolerant. It can be planted in October for a really early spring harvest. Here are the facts.

Im in zone 7 also, middletown, de. Love your channel. ❤
i been doing it last 5 years in southern new england, …this winter was far worse than we seen in last 10 years ..we had 36 inches snow here in one shot …numerous nights near zero …and guess what, i'd say 80% of spinach survived. only casualties were in containers mainly but stuff in raised beds almost all pulled through. picked off it couple times in late fall and after that it was on its own.
Im in DE. I started spinach in January in the greenhouse. Just put it out about a week ago. Do you cover when it snows? Your method seems much easier. TFS
Just like cool fall planted flowers, there are several cool and biennial vegetables that can be an early spring crop. Please cover more of these.
Asian Greens. Root crops. Onions and chives, not just garlic.❤
How did these do in the snow and cold that came the next day?
I planted spinach last fall in Zone 6b where it was subzero degrees Fahrenheit for days this winter and it survived and will be ready to start harvesting in 2-3 weeks.
I live in Michigan in zone 5 and have been harvesting leaves all winter I harvested my mid July sown carrots and harvested them and lettuce on a warm day in November. Spinach, mizuna, napa, tatsoi survived under the snow and we had a few warm days they grew a bit. I harvested some leaves from the side and left the plant intact. They have straw around them all winter and the snow insulates them also. They are perking right up for spring. A twofer. I will harvest some seed and plant new ones in the fall. I was surprised by all this . All my days growing up, the garden was pretty much done when you harvested squash and nothing else was planted. I did garlic in the fall also. I was able to harvest greens and also small beets. I had a hooped covered bed (plastic) that the lettuce and greens kept growing in even during snowstorms. It is March and they are still growing, even some lettuce. I had to go out in my boots sometimes but got a few fresh leaves here and there. Fall gardening is my new thing!
