Welcome to the Garden! Join us in discussing all things garden related. We love photos, please share. Our interests are varied and we are usually here all week. Happy Spring!

It’s a little early for full on spring, but here we are. I usually get some daffodils in a side garden because the snow had melted some and the cement from the adjacent driveway warms things up. However, this year it’s a record-breaking warm year in the Rocky Mountain states. There was hardly any snow all winter at my house. When we did get moisture, it warmed up to unseasonable temps and melted the snow. It’s grim out here, folks.

Crocuses are going strong right now, although a lot of mine are already done.

I went seed shopping for some native plant seeds and figured it was about time to start some lettuce in my raised bed as well. I’m hoping I’ll have time for some wildflower seeds. The packet recommends planting seeds four to six weeks prior to the last frost. So far we’re getting down to the high 20’s and low 30’s and I think I’m still within the window. I’ll have to fence off my little raised bed for the lettuce because the squirrels are digging in it.

Pruning season is here so I picked up a few new tools also. Yes, those seeds are very expensive but it’s a great company. They are a Colorado seed company and I know there are no junk seeds in the packets.

I meant to put the lilies in the ground last fall but I wasn’t able to do it. They are in pots and the lilies in front are poking up under the leaf litter.

Mr. Light and I went for a walk the other day at one of our favorite spots by the river. It’s a nice place, with a boat ramp for the Colorado River and a large spit of land with native cottonwoods and scrub brush. One native shrub that grows everywhere is Three Leaf Sumac, or skunk bush. It’s got a very weird smell when you scratch the bark — spicy and musty. I can’t describe it, but when the berries are ripe it is a food factory for the baby robins. The flowers are small but pretty! I have one growing outside my deck and it shades a barrel with coral bells and columbines.

It was a nice day for a walk. The weather is so unseasonably warm and we are all enjoying it but we know the water situation this summer is going to be dire for water use. I don’t expect we’ll get much of a runoff this year at all. They are predicting that Lake Powell will be at deadpool this year. Not enough water to send downstream.

Silt Nature Preserve is a great place to enjoy nature, and it’s right off I-70!

We usually see a lot of birds at the Nature Preserve, and we got a flicker sighting this time.

I have so many house plants and pieces of house plants that I just can’t throw away. I got a bunch of little pots and some plug trays so I’m working on getting some succulents and hoyas started and the local plant stores will buy them from me. I’m also thinking I should be able to set up a market booth this summer and sell tie dye and plants. I think I am keeping this little guy for myself. The plant is a tradescantia. Super cute! I love stuff like this.

I hope all the snow is melting in the east and the west gets some instead! We are all in this together. What’s going on in your yard or neighborhood?
