I’ve become somewhat of a pruning addict. Whether it’s the rambling roses growing outside our front door or my prized Annabelle hydrangeas, I follow every snippet of pruning advice to help them flower — and thrive — at their very best.

But despite my love of a good chop, I’d been using an old pair of secateurs that had grown stiff and rusty over time. It was clearly time for an upgrade.

After much research (from price to blade sharpness and handle comfort), I came across the £35 secateurs that would forever change my pruning routine: the Kent & Stowe Eversharp All Purpose Secateurs.

Praised for their hard blade that never blunts, I was sold on their promise to deadhead roses, prune shrubs and live, green wood with ease. But did they live up to their promise?

Trying out my new secateurs

They arrived tightly secured. After I worked out how to release the safety function, I put them straight to work.

I began lopping off old dried hydrangea heads before moving on to the chunkier wisteria stems that were beginning to intertwine around the fence. I knew March was the right time to do this before spring growth surges.

With every chop, I was amazed at how smoothly each cut was. All the effort was in the tool, not my hand, unlike my older pair. If it wasn’t for the setting sun, I would have quite happily carried on pruning well into the night.

I’ve even caught my green-fingered husband sneaking off into the garden just so he could get in on the smooth secateur action.

Other features that I love include:

They are made from a high-carbon steel that cuts through the toughest of plantsWhile I’m right-handed, these secateurs are designed to accommodate both left and right-handed users, as well as various hand sizesThey have a soft rubber on the side, making even the toughest of pruning jobs comfortableA clever safety mechanism means they can be locked after use. My old secateurs didn’t have this, so I’d always feel slightly anxious popping them in our tool storage box

The team at Kent & Stowe explain: ‘The extraordinary blade is made with unique aerospace-coated technology called Alcrona Pro. This coating is an advanced technology known for its exceptional hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability, making it ideal for extending tool life and improving performance.’

I never thought a pair of secateurs would change how I prune my plants, but these have. Not only have they made pruning faster, but it’s now a more enjoyable task and less of a gardening chore.

With spring gardening jobs in full force, why not upgrade your secateurs as I did? Your plants will thank you.
