We have a crusher run gravel pad for boats that we’re extending. It’s several inches thick, and we plan to build a garage there in 5–10 years.
Our grader recommended crusher run because it compacts well, resists washing out, provides traction on wet days, and supports heavy trucks and boats without ruts.
However, it’s much finer and more compact than the #8 or #53 stone driveways I usually see. Those sometimes look cleaner and don’t leave shoes as gritty/dusty.
Do we need to add #8 or #53 as a top layer, or is crusher run alone the right approach? For context, it drains well, no major pooling of water on heavy rain, weeds are minimal, and it hasn’t washed out after 6 months.
